Great Yarmouth

Rambling

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: Monthly on Tuesdays
Second Tuesday in the month
Venue: Various venues

We generally walk for about 2-2.5 hours with a short break for refreshments part way round.

With the ethos of the U3A being about learning we try, where possible, to incorporate something of historical, natural or architectural interest.

Also with the idea of self- led activities, members are invited to lead walks - if necessary, help and guidance for first time leaders is readily available.

We are a friendly bunch who enjoy fresh air, exploring and appreciating the wonderful world around us, so if you would like to join, please email us.

2024 Walks

November - Great Yarmouth Town Walk including Herring Bridge

Tony will lead the next walk at 10.00 on Tuesday 12th November. It will be a 4.5 mile town walk, to include the new Herring Bridge.

Meet at the lay-by opposite Gt Yarmouth Power Station, at the end of Hartmann Road, (off South Denes Road), NR30 3PY.

The Christmas lunch has now been booked and paid for, and details of the walk will be sent nearer the time.

September - Thurne

Sue and Erny's walk in September at Thurne was enjoyed by fourteen members; we were able to walk  in well cleared paths along the riverbank, with good views across the marshes.

June - Hickling Walk

Ros and Mike's walk from Hickling in June was an ideal opportunity to make some new four legged friends.

May - The Street to Somerleyton

A walk of about 5 miles through countryside.

We were lucky enough to have a herd of fallow deer run across the footpath in front of us on Chris and John's walk.

April - Gunton and Corton

Steve led a walk for the Rambling Group through Gunton and Corton nature reserves, with a view to showing us a range of wooden sculptures carved by voulnteers.

These were seemingly ignored by members, who in fact were astonished to see a tawny owl sitting in a tree nearby, apparently unconcerned by our presence.

March - Winterton

Barbara organised a Winterton Walk

February - Repp with Bastwick

Lynda and Richard led our February walk, although this had to be amended somewhat due to flooding in the area. We discovered that Repps with Bastwick actually means an area  formed of strips of land, and with lime trees probably present.

We were also taken to see the the old tower, ( clearly visible from the road, but not that accessible) and given a potted history of the structure.

January - North Denes along the dunes

Jackie led our January walk from North Denes, along the dunes, past the river to the Minster and back through the cemetery and Waterways.

This was an ideal winter walk as it avoided muddy footpaths, and a particular highlight was when Jackie showed us the tree planted in the grounds of the Minster to remember those who lost their lives during the Covid pandemic.

Rambling Group Report

Once again, members have contributed a walk every month, and we have generally been lucky with the weather. Leaders have been very good at finding items of interest on walks, although a particular highlight was the unexpected appearance of a herd of fallow deer crossing the footpath just in front of us.
